When we think of hygge—the Danish way of living with comfort, connection, and calm—it’s easy to picture steaming mugs of cocoa, soft woollen blankets, and flickering candles in the depths of winter.
But in Denmark, hygge is a year-round celebration. In the warmer months, it simply takes on a different shape. Cosy jumpers and firelight become picnics by the sea, bike rides through forests, and slow, meaningful moments with those we love.
If you're feeling the pull to slow down this weekend, here are some beautiful, summertime hygge ideas to try...
One of the most powerful ways to embrace hygge is by starting the day with intention.
Wake up slowly. Linger over breakfast with your family. Brew coffee, light a pastel-coloured candle, and open the windows to let the morning air drift in. Talk about your plans for the day. Smile. Be present.
The Danes believe how you start your morning sets the tone for the rest of the day—and I couldn't agree more.
Go for a gentle walk and, if possible, find a body of water—a river, lake, or the sea. Danes love an early morning swim (yes, even in the colder months!), but if that feels like a stretch, dipping your toes can still bring that sense of calm connection.
Take in the sights, sounds, and smells. Let nature do what it does best—restore and refresh you.
Fun fact: In 2016, bikes outnumbered cars in Copenhagen! Cycling isn’t just transport—it’s a treasured activity.
Why not hop on your bike this weekend? Whether it’s a solo ride or a family outing, there's something incredibly freeing about coasting along under the summer sun.
A beach day is a beautiful way to enjoy hygge. Hunt for shells or sea glass, build a sandcastle, paddle in the shallows, and breathe in that salty air.
The Danes are known to bring simple seaside picnics: think waffles, fresh fruit, jams, and whipped cream. Nourishment doesn’t have to be fancy—it just needs to be shared and savoured.
Hygge and firelight go hand in hand—yes, even in summer.
As the evening draws in, light a fire pit or gather around a few candles outside. Toast marshmallows. Wrap yourself in a light blanket. And most importantly—share stories. In Scandinavia, storytelling is cherished, and I believe keeping that tradition alive brings something truly special to our lives.
If you can, head somewhere without artificial light and look up. Let the stars remind you how vast and beautiful this world is. Hygge invites us to pause and notice. A star-filled sky is the perfect place to do just that.
For me, discovering hygge and embracing it—both in my personal life and my teaching—has been transformative. It’s not about perfection or aesthetics. It’s about being present, creating comfort, and finding joy in the everyday.
I hope this weekend you find your own little moments of hygge.
