In early years education it can sometimes feel like we are constantly being shown the next beautiful set-up.
Perfect shelves.
Carefully curated resources.
Rooms filled with new equipment.
And it’s easy to find yourself thinking:
"My practice will never be as good as that setting… they have such a big budget."
But let’s pause for a moment.
Because this belief is one of the biggest myths in early years practice.
The truth is this:
You don’t need a tonne of resources to make learning happen.
Children do not need endless toys, constant new equipment or shelves filled with plastic resources.
What they need most is something much simpler.
The most powerful resource in any early years environment isn’t something you can buy.
It’s you.
Children thrive when they are surrounded by adults who are:
• interested in what they are doing
• responsive in their interactions
• curious about their thinking
• willing to slow down and listen
When adults give children their time and attention, something remarkable happens.
Learning unfolds naturally.
A conversation becomes language development.
A question becomes scientific thinking.
A walk outdoors becomes discovery.
The richest learning experiences often come from the simplest moments.
Sometimes we can fall into the trap of believing that we need to provide more.
More toys.
More activities.
More structured experiences.
But what children truly need is presence.
They need adults who notice the small things.
Who listen when they ask questions.
Who sit beside them as they explore.
These responsive interactions are where the deepest learning takes place.
This belief sits right at the heart of my Hygge in the Early Years training.
Hygge is not about creating beautiful environments filled with expensive resources.
It’s about creating spaces where children feel calm, connected and secure.
It’s about slowing down.
It’s about meaningful interactions.
And it’s about recognising that the most important thing we can offer children isn’t something we buy — it’s the way we show up for them.
When we stop focusing on needing more resources, something powerful happens.
We begin to create space.
Space to observe children more closely.
Space to follow their interests.
Space to have real conversations.
Space to simply be present.
And when children feel that connection, learning flows naturally.
So if you ever find yourself thinking your practice isn’t good enough because you don’t have the biggest budget…
Take a breath.
Pause for a moment.
And remember this:
You’re already enough.
