Hygge in a Small Setting

Jun 01, 2025

You Don't Need a Bigger Classroom to Create a Beautiful Early Years Environment

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear in Early Years is:

"I'd love my setting to look like that, but we just don't have the space."

Or:

"We don't have the budget for those resources."

And honestly?

I completely understand.

Social media can make it feel as though every inspiring environment has endless funding, purpose-built spaces and shelves overflowing with beautiful resources.

But after more than 20 years working in Early Years, visiting hundreds of settings and supporting educators across the world, I've learned something important:

The most magical environments aren't always the biggest.

In fact, some of the most nurturing, calm and connected spaces I've ever visited have been the smallest.

Because Hygge isn't something you buy.

It's something children feel.

What Children Really Need

When children talk about the places they love, they rarely mention expensive resources.

They remember how a space made them feel.

Safe.

Welcome.

Calm.

Connected.

Seen.

And that's exactly what Hygge is about.

Creating environments where children feel at home.

Not through endless resources.

But through thoughtful choices.

Sometimes that looks like:

🪵 A cosy corner with cushions, blankets and soft lighting

🧺 A wicker basket filled with a few carefully chosen natural treasures

🫖 Sharing a warm drink and a story together

🌿 A tiny outdoor area transformed with herbs, flowers and a bird feeder

📚 A reading nook where children can retreat when the world feels overwhelming

None of these things require a huge budget.

What they require is intention.

Small Spaces Hold Big Magic

One of the things I love most about smaller settings is the intimacy they create.

Children know where things belong.

Relationships often feel closer.

The environment feels calmer.

There are fewer distractions.

More opportunities for connection.

More opportunities to notice.

More opportunities to simply be together.

And perhaps that's something we need reminding of.

Because in a world that constantly tells us we need more, bigger and better, children are often asking for something much simpler.

Connection.

Belonging.

Comfort.

Time.

What If The Problem Isn't Your Budget?

So many educators come to me feeling frustrated.

They think their environment isn't good enough.

That they need more resources.

More furniture.

More equipment.

More money.

Yet often the biggest transformation doesn't come from adding more.

It comes from changing how we see the environment we already have
