We Work Out Of One Room

Aug 30, 2019

As a result of the Hygge training undertaken, we have taken on board the basic principles of Hygge, despite having previously implemented small elements of the ‘Hygee’ idea and building our ethos upon the idea of creating a cosy, inviting and special environment for the children in our care, we felt as a result of the training and further investigation into the Hygge principles and how this can relate and be implemented into Early Years Settings, we made a conscious decision to plan and create our learning environment around these principles as we believe that creating these ‘special moments’ and inviting, relaxing, cosy environments has incredible benefits on the children in our care in terms of their well-being, mood, behaviour and emotions.

As a setting, we have always tried to limit the amount of plastic on offer, but as a result of this training we decided to make even more of a conscious effort to do so; instead bringing in more loose parts, natural resources, soft furnishings, baskets instead of boxes, low level lighting to create ambience, fresh flowers and lighting candles and incense as part of our everyday set up (although we alternate, vary and rotate resources and the set-up of the playroom on a weekly basis these opportunities and experiences are consistently on offer.)

We have since developed our own ‘Curiosity Corner’ within the playroom which consists of low level upcycled storage, treasure and exploratory baskets, loose parts, fairy lights, natural resources and soft furnishings.

With the changes we have made to the playroom and experiences we offer in order to incorporate and create a hygge inspired environment, we have seen a significant difference in the behaviour, moods and play of the children in our care since these changes have been implemented; they demonstrate increased levels of curiosity, higher levels of engagement and concentration, whilst also developing deeper relationships with each other and caregivers, thus improving their problem-solving, critical thinking and turn-taking as a result of this.

As home-based childcare providers we are exceptionally lucky to be in a position to not only have access to affordable and online CPD opportunities like the Hygge course, but also to have the flexibility and freedom to implement these changes and principles almost immediately as per our new knowledge and skills and to be able to build upon these principles freely within our environment and create such a calming, relaxing and inviting play space for our children to learn and grow within.
