Why Aren’t the Children Playing?

Jun 18, 2025

You’ve spent hours setting up what you believe is a beautiful, inspiring play environment—but the children aren’t playing. Why not?

Let’s look through this with my Hygge in the Early Years lens, and ask:

“What do children need from this space to feel at ease, curious, and connected?”

Let’s problem-solve together:

⏳ Time to Sink In

Peter Gray, a research professor on play, reminds us that it can take children up to 45 minutes to truly immerse themselves in play. If we interrupt this flow—by giving directions, asking questions, or shifting the activity—the clock resets. Are we giving them enough uninterrupted time to get lost in their play?

🌿 FREE TRAINING: Why Children Aren't Engaging (And What To Do Instead)

If you're finding yourself planning more and more activities but children seem less engaged than ever, I'd love to invite you to my free training.

Inside, I'll share the three Scandinavian-inspired shifts that help children become calmer, more focused and more deeply engaged in their learning.

🧩 Familiarity with Materials

Your space may be filled with beautiful loose parts and open-ended resources—but are these familiar to the children? If not, they may feel unsure or overwhelmed. Try introducing new materials gradually and modeling their use, supporting children as they learn how to engage creatively.

🧠 Too Much Choice?

More isn’t always better. A space overflowing with options can quickly become overstimulating and distracting. Simplify your environment. Less choice often leads to deeper focus and more imaginative play.

👐 Encouraging Independence

Are children struggling to find what they need or asking for constant help? Take a step back and observe. Could the resources be more accessible? Could the children help organize the space or create labels, giving them real ownership of their environment?

🌿 Need for Calm and Reflection

Do you offer quiet, cozy spaces where children can be still, reflective, or just be? Not all children crave constant stimulation—some need places for peace and quiet within the rhythm of their day.

🎭 The Adult’s Role

Reflect on your presence in the space. Are you unintentionally over-structuring play with too many adult-led invitations? Are you allowing enough space for child-led exploration and spontaneous discovery?

🔧 Challenge and Versatility

Finally, are your toys and materials open-ended and capable of being used in a variety of ways? Children are drawn to resources that spark imaginationoffer challenge, and invite creativity.

What If The Problem Isn't What You Think It Is?

One of the biggest revelations for educators inside my training is this:

Children don't become deeply engaged because we've created the perfect environment.

They become engaged when they feel:

✨ Safe

✨ Connected

✨ Calm

✨ Trusted

✨ Interested

The environment matters.

But relationships matter more.

And often, the answer isn't adding another activity.

It's slowing down enough to notice what children are telling us.
