What is a tinker tray?
Tinker trays are filled with open ended loose part materials that will spark curiosity, problem solving, critical thinking and imaginative play. The objects in the tray can be used in any way the child chooses and there is no set way that they should be used. It is commonly used in the Reggio Emilia Approach to learning and can be adapted for a range of different ages and stages of development.Â

I quite like using trays made out of natural materials like wood and seagrass as i always think we can display our materials in a beautiful way in these. I love the quote above and it reminds me that it's so important to see the beauty in the rain. After a very dry April the rain we received here in Yorkshire yesterday was very welcome.Â
I wanted to share a few rainy day ideas for you this Spring to support your nature based practice.Â
1. Head outside and smell the rain
We're often in such a race to get out of the rain, perhaps running to get inside, that we forget to actually experience the rain. Get dressed up in suitable waterproof clothing and head outside to smell and feel the rain. How does it sound? What temperature is the rain as it hits your skin (does it feel warm or cold?) What shapes do we notice the raindrops make as they hit the ground? Can you take 5 big deep breaths in and feel the rain calm your senses? As you tune in and smell the rain this is called Petrichor and it is the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil.Â

Teaching children about nature and giving them the opportunity to be outdoors exploring is a very important part of our day. I found the child thrived when doing outdoor activities especially in the local woodland areas.
They love to collect objects, bringing them back to the setting and incorporating them into their play and exploration.
Over the past year it has become more important to be able to be outdoors, exploring in our own little group setting. Which has helped all of us to cope with the current pandemic & changes.
This is why I have now started to change how I teach and the resources I use. I havenât got much space to store lots of one use resources. So this change has definitely allowed me to minimise resources to ones that provide the most learning opportunities.

Firstly I hear you ask, what is a provocation? A provocation can come in many different forms, but it is always intended to provoke thoughts, ideas, and actions that can help to expand on a thought, project, idea or an interest. These are an important aspect of child led learning seen in the Reggio Emilia Approach. By setting up a provocation we are allowing young children to see, experience and make decisions about the world themselves through their own explorations. It could be from a book, a photograph, interesting objects. The interaction with the provocation can involve problem solving, working imaginatively, form new ideas and make their own conclusions.Â

As winter approaches I wanted to share some thoughts and inspiration on the different ways you can create enchantment and magic in your play.
I do believe there should be an element of beautifulness in your play. If you don't want to go and play there and learn more than neither will the children. That's why when I set areas up I like to pay attention to the details I create. Adding in mirrors for a different perspective, considering the opportunity to add light, different textures to stimulate the senses and elements of nature. I like to include open ended resources and books that allow the learning to take the direction the child desires. I put the time into creating something that will have impact on the children's learning and development. That's why I don't do reams of forward planning and masses of paperwork and instead put this time into the environment (but that's a whole different blog post!).

Are you settling into your new rhythm?
Change can be really hard and they say it actually takes up to 7 weeks before we adapt. Think about times you may have been on a new health drive, whether a diet or starting at the gym the first few weeks are always the hardest.
We all have a daily routine which we are used to but now have to create a new balance in our lives, a rhythm at home over the coming weeks and this will help establish a new normal, a new sense of balance in our lives. I know we have all been feeling anxious of late but we need to start reflecting on the change and creating a new calm in our family lives.
Letâs take this time to recharge our batteries and to think about what we have taken for granted and the fast paced lifestyle we are used to. Who loves potion making?
Today we have made some great mixtures but even better so much learning has happened- From predicting to problem solving!
Weâve explored making âWitches Bloodâ and watched it fizz and bubble as the bicarbonate of soda combined with the vinegar.

We also made âGoblins Snot âmixing together cornflour, water, green colouring and chia seeds.
We popped our mixture into bottles and wrote our own potion labels too.
According to the children tomorrow we are making a spell book!!
