"I sit by the window with a warm drink, looking out and watching for those first few flakes of snow to fall"

Dec 05, 2024

By Emma Thackray

I have always had Hygge embedded deep within me, I just never knew the name for it or how to describe it, other than “a love of being cosy”.

My husband finds it amusing that in the winter months when snow is forecast, I sit by the window with a warm drink, looking out and watching for those first few flakes of snow to fall. The excitement in me rises as more snow falls. There’s just something so cosy about being in your nice warm house watching the snow lay outside isn’t there.

Autumn and Winter have always been my favourite seasons, with a particular love of Halloween and Christmas, as that’s when I really feel cosy, calm and relaxed.

However, since embarking on the Hygge in the Early Years Accreditation I have come to the realisation that Hygge can be experienced at any time of the year. It’s not all about the weather outside, it’s about the environment you create and the calm that you bring into your home and life.

I am therefore transforming my home, wh...

Hygge Case Study: "I had lost the joy in my job"

Jan 04, 2022

By Little Chickens Childminding

I’m a childminder who works by herself, and after 10 years of childminding I had lost the joy in my job. My setting was full of all the usual colourful plastic, noisy light-up toys, separate baby toys and preschool toys all designed with one purpose in mind, colourful displays on the walls with the children’s identical craftwork. Outside was set-up with more laminated displays, and bright toys - the nursery look that seemed to be expected. I was feeling claustrophobic and overwhelmed with it all, the children weren’t even engaging with anything and were flittering between toys, not interested in the carefully laid out tuff trays. there would be a chaotic ‘mess’ at the end of the day. I was struggling to switch off when not working, the playroom wasn’t being used by my family, and it had become a separate entity within our home. I was feeling under pressure planning activities - my work, life, and home was completely out of balance, and I wasn’t even fin...

Hygge Case Study: "When Covid hit I knew I needed a new direction, focus and a renewed sense of worth"

Jan 04, 2022

By Louise Fleetwood Childminding

As a Childminder of eight years each Ofsted inspection brought new pressures to work harder, strive for better and produce even more paperwork to 'prove' how you were meeting every childs needs. I was spending my evenings and weekends writing up, documenting and preparing resources and had very little work life balance, or even enjoyment for the job anymore.

When Covid hit I knew I needed a new direction, focus and a renewed sense of worth. Through embarking on my Hygge journey I have brought the outdoors in, loose  parts and uninterrupted opportunity form the best parts of our play and outdoor picnics and adventures are a daily must. Over the past year I have noticed how physically capable my children have become, far more resilient and loads healthier than I have ever looked after. Each and every one of the children I care for now has a desire to get outside each and every day. Parents have thanked me for surrounding their children in nature and h...

"Before I can be the best Mum or Childminder, I need to look after myself, and continue to do so everyday"

Oct 21, 2021

By my member Liane

I found the first module, re-balance the most useful for me personally. It really has given me a reminder that before I can be the best Mum or Childminder, I need to look after myself, and continue to do so everyday, even when life gets busy. I have tried to slow myself down and to introduce some Hygge moments into every day. I found that sometimes I was just so busy and worrying about everything, that I had stopped enjoying the little things. I have started to crochet a blanket, this is something that I am finding very relaxing and really enjoying to help de stress.

I have also made some alterations to my home, particularly my living room. The lighting was overhead and really bright, with one small lamp. I have added fairy lights into my living room to make me feel cosy in the evening, I have noticed what an impact the lights can have on the environment and the general mood. Switching off the over head light and using the fairy lights and lamp is warm, cozy a...

"I was spending almost all my earnings on the latest toys and trends to keep the children happy."

Mini Explorers Childcare – Keira Gilbert

I started my childminding journey in January 2020 just before the first lockdown. While I absolutely love working with children, I decided that becoming my own boss meant I had the power to implement changes to my practice I had been wanting to do for years but was always met with criticism. I needed to slow down for myself and for the children, especially during the most challenging obstacle we had ever faced: a worldwide pandemic. I wanted to have the facts and skills to be able to implement this new vision and respond to criticism in an informed and positive way. I compared myself too much to nurseries I had previously worked on and was stuck in a loop of trying to churn out huge activities one after another through the day to appease what I thought parents would be looking for. As well as this I was spending almost all my earnings on the latest toys and trends to keep the children happy.

The vision I had for my setting was one that valu...

"I was churning out quantity and not quality and totally wearing myself out, which was ridiculous!"

Aug 02, 2021

I have been a registered Childminder since 2002.

I began Childminding after my divorce in 2000.

I wanted to have an occupation where I could work from home and be there for my two daughters and support them through their school life.

Throughout my career I have given 100% and so far achieved 3 Outstanding Ofsted Grades.

Unfortunately I feel that because I have given so much to my job and the families I care for, I have missed out on the main reason for starting this childminding journey......... my family.

For years I thought that my vision was to provide a setting which emulates a school nursery. I would be obsessed with the EYFS Development Guidance, taking multiple daily observations and obsessively completing tracking charts.

I used a variety of online platforms to observe our children and found the whole process to be so time consuming and a complete chore. I felt that because I had constantly done so many observations, I needed to keep up that pace.

In actual fact, I was...

Hygge Case Study: As A Childminder I Felt The Pressure To Be Like A Nursery

Nov 30, 2020

I am a childminder based in North Wales at the foot of Snowdon and I work mostly on my own with the occasional help from an assistant when required. Before I started the Hygge Accreditation I felt stressed, tired and I always felt the pressure to operate my setting like a nursery or even a school. I used to plan activities based on themes I thought that the children would like and when they weren’t responsive to the work and tasks that I set out I would feel deflated and a failure. I was constantly tiered and stressed and just felt that I wasn’t enough for the children. I wanted to enjoy my work again and I wanted the children to be excited for the activities that we would be doing. After my last inspection where I achieved an overall ‘adequate’ mark I felt that a change needed to be made not only to the setting but for my own wellbeing and the wellbeing of the children attending.

I have now created a vision of that every child matters within the setting by following their i

Hygge Case Study: "I used to be guilty of setting activities up"

Nov 19, 2020

I have been a childminder for the last 6 years and over that time, my setting has had gradual enhancement. I have always had a calm and neutral decor and quite a laid-back approach in my setting and in my teaching. I had the mindset and personality for the Hygge way, I just lacked the knowledge as to where and how to progress with it and how to ingrain it into the fabric of my setting and teaching.

Before I started this course, I was guilty of setting up activities in search of a finished product. I wanted something physical to show parents what we had achieved that day. I felt if I didn’t have something to show parents, I would think they haven’t achieved anything. I recently had a light bulb moment when I received a photo and message from a parent whose child had been with me for around 4 months. The photo showed her child playing at a playgroup. The message read “Thank you for being the reason my son will now go off to play, rather than being clung to my leg!”

It was a moment ...

A Hygge Case Study: "I was at one of the lowest points in my career."

Nov 19, 2020

When I started the Hygge in the Early Years Accreditation, I was at one of the lowest points in my career.  I work full time as a childminder and was waiting for hip replacement, the pain affected my sleep and I worried how I would manage and afford time off.  This I could cope with, but I also felt I had no time for myself, struggling to run voluntary groups I’d always managed and juggling family life.  The Hygge course helped me take a good look at my life and realised I was stuck in a rut, doing things out of routine, not necessarily what I wanted to do.  The children were happy but I noticed they too were playing with the same toys, doing same routines and places.

I decided I had to priorities my own wellbeing and I wanted to make changes in my work place too.

As part of the course I set the following three Hygge action points:

  • Improve own health/wellbeing
  • Establish joint weekly Forest School sessions
  • Reduce the use of non-natural and non-recyclable materials and resources
  • ...

Hygge Case Study: 'The fire in my belly has returned!'

Nov 19, 2020

I registered as a childminder in 2008 after the birth of my second daughter.  At this time, my first daughter was 17 years old and I had worked full time in an office from her being 9 weeks old. As you can imagine I felt like I had missed out on so much, so with my second daughter, I did not want to miss anything this time around.  I’d worked in an office for over 20 years and I always knew I was on the wrong career path, however, having a mortgage and bills to pay, together with earning a good salary, I felt that there was no other alternative.  Having my second daughter changed all this, and the thought of moving away from office admin to more caring and nurturing career which I had always craved, (and being at home with my baby daughter) was an exciting opportunity I could not miss.

Childminding is a career I have grown to love over the years. I must admit, initially I did wonder whether it was for me, it was such a different role to what I was used to, I felt isolated and it was a...
